Vikings fall to New Mexico

Region V Tournament play opened on Thursday, May 8 pitting the second seed Vikings against third seed New Mexico.

The game was a low scoring affair to start; Travis Vlasek hit an RBI single in the second inning for a 1-0 New Mexico lead. The score remained until the Vikings tied it up in the sixth.
Brandon Seidmeyer lined a two out RBI single, scoring Austin Godwin, who led off the inning with a single, and had moved to second on a wild pitch. 
New Mexico scored seven in the seventh inning; Julius Ramirez hit a bases clearing double for a 4-1 lead and later in the inning, Casen Savage hit a three run double, while Vlasek reached on an error scoring a run, and Luis Urias capped the inning with a fielder's choice grounder. 
The Vikings continued battling. Paxton led off the inning with a walk, Brandon Creek followed with a single, and was out trying to advance to second, moving Paxton to third. Seidmeyer drove in his second run of the afternoon with a line drive single to draw the Vikings within 8-2.
A sac fly from Ramirez and an RBI single from Jorge De Los Santos in the ninth from New Mexico gave them a 10-2 lead. The Vikings got a pair of hits, a single by JT Cienega, and a bloop double from Nik Sanders, but were unable to draw any closer. 
Offensively, the Vikings tallied 10 hits. Seidmeyer led the way with a 3-4 day at the plate, driving in a pair of runs. Creek had a pair of hits, while Cienega, Sanders, Godwin, Paxton and Kain Sanchez all tallied a hit. Sloan Barrett drew three walks, and Cienega had two. 
On the mound, Braydon Risley threw six innings, giving up seven hits, five runs (one earned) while striking five. Chase Davis (0.2 IP), Jack Surdey (0.2 IP) and Blaze Milam (1.2 IP) all threw out of the bullpen. Surdey and Milam each tallied a pair of strikeouts. 
The series continues Friday afternoon with game two. First pitch is set for 1pm at Dub Hayes Field.
