Viking Baseball splits with Vernon

Grayson Baseball split with Vernon on the road on Wednesday, April 2. Grayson and Vernon flipped venues due to weather in the Denison area. 


Game one

Backed by three long balls, the Vikings jumped out ahead early, and never looked back, winning 11-1 in a run ruled five inning game. The Vikings scored at least one run in the first four innings. 
In the first inning, Sloan Barrett led off with a single, JT Cienega drew a walk and Nik Sanders was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Caleb Hoover followed with his 12th homer of the season, a grand slam to put Grayson out in front 4-0. 
Eric Maisonet homered for Vernon in their half of the first inning, for their only run of the game. 
In the second inning, Brandon Creek led off with a walk, and Sloan Barrett followed with his fifth homer of the year, a two run blast to extend the Viking lead to 6-1. 
Hoover led off the third inning with a single, and Easton Paxton followed with his first round tripper of the season for an 8-1 Viking lead. 
Sanders and Cienega both hit one out singles in the fourth inning. Boston Lee followed with an RBI double, Hoover an RBI single and Austin Godwin capped the three run inning with sac fly for their 11th run of the inning. 
Kade Neuenschwander and the defense shut the door in the fifth inning, with Neuenschwander picking up two of his seven strikeouts in the fifth inning. Neuenschwander has thrown four straight complete games for the Vikings. Against Vernon, he threw five innings, giving up just four hits, one run, no walks and seven strikeouts. 
Offensively, Hoover finished 3-3 with his grand slam, and five RBI. Barrett was 2-4 with a homer and two RBI. Paxton (two RBI), Cienega, Sanders, Lee, Brandon Creek and Kain Sanchez all recorded a hit offensively.

Game two

In a back and forth scoring high scoring affair, Vernon won game two, winning 15-10. 
The Grayson offense stayed hot in the first inning. Barrett and Cienega drew walks to start the game. Sanders followed with an RBI double for a 1-0 lead. A sac fly from Lee made it a 2-0 lead for the Vikings.
In the second inning, Paxton led off with a walk, and moved to third on a single from Creek. Trey Walker brought in a run on a fielder's choice for a 3-0 lead.
Joey Druan homered for Vernon in the bottom of the second to cut the Viking lead to 3-1. Jorge Olivera-Gutierrez reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on a single from Nate Berry as the Viking lead was trimmed to 3-2. They tied the game on a groundout from Will Dixon later in the inning.
The Vikings retook the lead in the fourth inning, putting up four runs. Walker and Barrett both hit one out singles. Cienega's single broke the tie, and two batters later, Lee hit a two run double for a 6-3 Viking lead. Hoover and Godwin followed with walks to load the bases, and Paxton was hit by a pitch to extend the lead to 7-3.
In the Vernon fourth inning, Irvin Leonard worked a bases loaded walk, and Cooper Thomas followed with a two run single to cut the Viking lead to 7-6. Vernon tied the game at 7 in the bottom of the fifth on a groundout from Dixon, scoring Olivera-Gutierrez, who led off the inning with a single.
In the seventh inning, Brandon Creek worked the leadoff walk for the Vikings, moved to second on a groundout, to third on a flyout, and scored on a wild pitch for an 8-7 lead.
A fielder's choice groundout by Michael Russell in the Vernon seventh inning tied the game at 8-8. 
The Vikings re-took the lead in the eighth inning. Lee reached on an error to lead off the inning, followed by a Hoover walk. Godwin grounded into a double play, allowing Lee to advance to third. Paxton followed with a go-ahead single for a 9-8 lead. Paxton advanced to second, and scored on an RBI single from Creek for a 10-8 lead.Vernon tied the game in the eighth inning, getting a two run homer from Irvin Leonard to tie it at 10-10. They would go on to score seven runs in the inning.
Offensively, Lee led the offense with three RBI, and Paxton drove in two. Hoover drew four walks, while both Creek and Sanders finished 2-4 with an RBI. 

The Grayson record currently sits at 19-16 and 12-6 in conference play. The Vikings currently sit tied for second with McLennan in the NTJCAC standings, they are a game back of first place Weatherford.

The series shifts to Grayson for the final two games. Due to potential weather, the games will be played on Sunday, April 6 at 12 & 3pm at Dub Hayes Field.
