Big fourth quarter sends Viking women to victory

Nine straight points in the fourth quarter from Madison Carter helped the Vikings break away from a scrappy Weatherford team to win 70-58 and move to 4-1 in conference play.
It was a dog fight from the games opening tip. Kayla Jones got the Viking offense going early, and the teams traded leads early on. Madison Martin hit a jumper to take an 8-7 leada, later Diana Letaru added a layup, but a 7-0 run from Weatherford, put the Vikings in a 17-10 hole early on.
The Vikings kept battling, as Jones was good on a reverse layup, Carter and Tay Biglow both hit from deep, and the Vikings pulled within just one. After a basket from Martin, Fia Fiolialli grabbed her own miss, and hit a floater for a three point lead. Martin ended the quarter, blowing right by her defender for a layup just ahead of the buzzer, as the Vikings held a five point lead at the break.
Martin and the Vikings grew the lead to 43-36 on a steal and transition layup, but Weatherford hung around, cutting the Viking lead to just three at the end of the third quarter.
Carter caught fire in the fourth quarter, hitting three in a row from deep to grow the lead to 11 points. Ella Hamlin added a three for the Vikings largest lead at 62-48. Martin put an exclamation point on the win with a driving layup, as the Vikings secured their fourth conference victory.
Martin led the team in scoring with 17 points, while also adding five assists and six steals, both of which led the team. Carter added 14 points, and Jones 11 points.
Grayson will hit the road next week for a pair of road games, beginning Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Ranger. Tip-off is set for 5pm.
